Day One: A Brief Reflection Of The Last Four Years

Happy New Year and 2019!

Facebook just reminded me that four years ago today, I officially launched and announced my web design and marketing agency, BelMarketing Design Studio.

For those who may still be wondering about the name of the company or who may think it's because my office is in Bell Works, here's how the name actually came to be.

As you can see from the image below, I was living in Belmar when it all began, and so:

Belmar + Marketing = BelMarketing.

It's been a hell of a ride so far, full of some really great victories and cool moments along with its fair share of some really difficult lessons. I've made great connections, created some great relationships, and I've damaged some along the way as well (Sorry - I'll do better now that I know better).

There have been days I felt on top of the world and others where I wanted nothing more than to crawl beneath it - where simply crawling out of bed and opening my email took a great feat of courage.

I have had days where I've had more money than I knew what to do with and some nights where I've had sleep for dinner so that after I paid my rent, I could afford the ticket at a networking event and the gas to get there.

Yes. "Sleep for dinner". I said that.

As Dan Shute once wrote,

starting [the agency] is the best thing I've ever done, professionally speaking. The thing that they don’t tell you in the brochure, though, is that it’s also insanely hard. Like, INSANELY hard. You know how hard you think it is? Triple that, halve the amount of sleep you had last night, and catch your elbow on the shelf next to you. Then stub your toe, take a disappointing phone call, and catch your mum looking at you with that "I always thought she’d get a proper job one day" look in her eye.

The brochure is poorly designed with very little information and there sure as hell isn't manual. I've learned A LOT in the last four years that I'm not certain I would have discovered otherwise.

Forging my own journey through BelMarketing Design Studio has been either the worst best idea I've ever had or the best worst idea I've ever had. Either way, I didn't start the company to just struggle and survive.

I started the company because I wanted to help, to create an impact, and make a difference for other businesses and companies. And every new day is an opportunity to do just that.

Unlike most resolutions you'll see online this week, I've shared my goals with people who will keep me accountable and created structures for fulfillment with various coaches.

I may have started the company on my own but I'm definitely not alone in how far I've gotten and where I'm going.

2019 is going to be an epic, BREAKTHROUGH year.
